Verification stages
What does a bulk email verifier actually check?
Verification runs in sequence, and an address has to survive every stage to come back valid. Each stage removes a different category of risk, so the output cleanly reflects where an address failed.
Syntax.
The address is checked against RFC formatting rules, which catches typos and malformed entries.
Domain and MX records.
The domain is resolved and queried for mail exchange records. A domain with no MX record cannot receive mail.
SMTP mailbox check.
We open a live connection to the receiving mail server and ask whether the specific mailbox exists. This is done in real time, not looked up in a cached database of previous results.
Spam trap detection.
Addresses matching known trap patterns are flagged. Spam traps do the most damage to a sender's reputation because they exist specifically to identify senders who use old or purchased lists.
Disposable and temporary domains.
Addresses on throwaway providers are flagged separately, since they are technically valid but rarely worth sending to.
Role-based accounts.
Addresses like info@, support@, and sales@ are flagged so you can decide whether to keep them. They are usually valid and usually shared inboxes.
Catch-all detection.
Domains configured to accept mail at any address are identified, because a normal SMTP check cannot confirm an individual mailbox on them.
Yahoo and AOL disabled-user detection.
Yahoo and AOL keep accepting mail for accounts that have been deactivated. We identify these separately rather than returning them as valid.
Live checks, not cached data
Why does real-time SMTP verification matter?
Many verification services respond from a cached database of previously checked addresses. That is faster and less expensive to run, but the answer describes the mailbox as it was on the date it was last checked, not as it is now.
Mailboxes are closed, employees leave, and domains change mail providers continuously. MyEmailVerifier opens a live SMTP connection when you run the check, so the result reflects the mailbox's current state rather than a stored record. Reading your results
What do the verification results mean?
Four primary statuses come back on every list, and what you do with each one differs. Together, they show the handoff from verification to list action.
Valid
The mailbox exists and accepted our connection. Safe to send.
Invalid
The mailbox does not exist, or the domain cannot receive mail. Remove these before you send. They are the addresses that produce hard bounces.
Catch-all
The domain accepts mail at any address, so the individual mailbox cannot be confirmed. Some of these are real, and some are not. Send to them separately from your main list if you send to them at all.
Unknown
The receiving server did not return a usable response, usually because it was greylisting, rate-limiting, or temporarily unavailable. Retry these rather than deleting them.
Risk flags sit alongside the status. An address can be technically valid and still be a spam trap, a disposable domain, or a role-based account, which is why the flags are reported separately rather than folded into the status. That separation makes the handoff from verification to sending decisions clearer.

Speed and throughput
How long does it take to verify a large list?
Verification speed depends far more on the composition of your list than on its size. Lists concentrated on major consumer providers resolve quickly. Lists with many small business domains, unusual mail providers, or aggressive greylisting take longer, because each of those servers has to be queried individually and some of them deliberately slow down repeat connections.
Any service quoting a single fixed throughput number is quoting an average across list types rather than a figure you can plan against. Upload a sample of a few thousand addresses first, and the time that takes will predict your full run more accurately than any published benchmark. Start with a sample before you commit.
Knowing the limits
When is bulk verification the wrong tool?
Three situations where bulk verification will not give you what you need, stated plainly.
You are collecting addresses through a signup form.
Verify at the point of entry with the real-time API instead, so bad addresses never enter your database. Cleaning them out later costs more, and you will have already sent to some of them. Verify on entry if you want to prevent that cost.
Your list is mostly catch-all domains.
Verification will confirm the domains accept mail and little else. No verifier can resolve an individual mailbox on a true catch-all, and any service claiming otherwise is making an estimate.
Your deliverability problem is not a list problem.
If your addresses are valid and your mail still lands in spam, the cause is usually authentication, sending reputation, or content. Verification will not fix any of those. Check your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records first.
